The World
Beneath the World

There is a war humanity cannot see. It has been fought for longer than nations have existed. The people who fight it do not ask for recognition. They ask only that the Balance holds.

  The Protectors

Guardians

They are not soldiers. They are not hunters. They are something older — a class of beings who exist at the boundary between the human world and the forces that would unmake it.

Guardians are Called, not born. The Calling arrives without warning, without permission, and without a clear explanation of what it will cost. Some resist it. Most cannot. Those who answer find themselves changed in ways that cannot be undone — stronger, more aware, bound to a purpose that predates every civilization they have ever known.

They shift not out of rage, but out of duty. The wolf is not a curse. It is a form the body learns to carry when the stakes demand it. Guardians who have held the Covenant for decades describe the shift as something close to grief — a reminder of everything ordinary they have left behind.

“We are not what the stories say. We are what the stories were trying to protect you from knowing.”

  Bound by Blood and Oath

The Family

Guardians do not operate alone. They are organized into Families — small, tightly bound units that share territory, share duty, and share the weight of what they carry. A Family is not chosen by blood. It is chosen by the Calling, confirmed by the Covenant, and held together by something that has no clean name in any human language.

Families are flawed. They argue. They grieve. They make decisions under pressure that they will spend years second-guessing. The sacred does not make them perfect. It makes them responsible.

The Pacific Northwest Family is one of the oldest active units on the continent. Their territory covers hundreds of miles of old-growth forest, mountain range, and coastline. They have held it through things that would have broken lesser groups. They are still holding it.

  Sacred Ground

The Lodge & The Sanctum

Every Family has a Lodge — a physical place where the sacred and the ordinary overlap. It is not a fortress. It is not a headquarters. It is a home, in the deepest sense of that word: a place where Guardians can set down what they carry and remember why they carry it.

The Lodge of the Pacific Northwest Family is hidden in the old forest, far enough from human roads that the unawakened do not stumble across it. The land around it has been held for generations. The trees remember.

Deeper still is the Sanctum — a place where the Essence of the world is close enough to touch. Not every Guardian can access it. Not every Guardian should. The Sanctum is where the oldest oaths were sworn, where the Covenant was first written, and where the cost of breaking it is most clearly felt.

  The Fundamental Forces

Essence & Corruption

Before there were Guardians, before there was a Covenant, there were two forces moving through the world. One builds. One unmakes.

Essence is the current beneath living things — the energy that holds the world in its shape, that makes the old forests feel ancient and the mountains feel permanent. It is not magic in the way stories describe magic. It is closer to gravity: invisible, constant, and catastrophic when disrupted.

Corruption is not evil in any simple sense. It is entropy given direction. It does not announce itself. It seeps into places where the Essence has thinned — into grief, into violence, into the spaces left behind by things that should not have been destroyed. Left unchecked, it spreads. Left unchecked long enough, it consumes.

Guardians exist because someone, long ago, understood that the Balance between these forces would not maintain itself.

  The Sacred Law

The Covenant

The Covenant is not a rulebook. It is a set of principles so fundamental to Guardian existence that breaking them is not merely a violation — it is a kind of unmaking. Guardians who have held the Covenant for decades describe it less as a constraint and more as a structure: the thing that makes everything else possible.

Its core demands are few. The Veil holds: Guardians do not reveal themselves to the unawakened. Balance above all: the goal is never dominion, never war, only the preservation of what exists. The Family is sacred: no Guardian stands alone, and no Guardian abandons their own. Corruption must not pass: when the darkness moves, Guardians move first.

The Covenant has been tested. It has been broken. The consequences of breaking it are not punishments handed down from above. They are the natural result of what happens when the thing holding the Balance in place is removed.

“The Covenant is not what we follow. It is what we are.”
