Creatures

Alicore

The alicore are a majestic breed of lion that are found in the northern Leogan Mountains of Theikon.  However, unlike the lions found in the Plains of Rys, the alicore have giant wings similar to that of a great eagle.  Their body size, shape, and color are the same as normal lions, save their large wings of white feathers.

An alicore’s wings are tucked at its sides when not in use.  The base of its wings form right behind its shoulder blades, and an alicore’s wingspan can reach over twenty feet long.  Even though they are perfectly capable of flight, an alicore’s wings are mainly used for gliding, much like that of a hawk.

There is only one known breed of alicore, but since the end of the Great Calm there have been a few farmers and shepherds who claim to have seen a different kind of alicore altogether.   This new breed of alicore is said to have a grayish-red body with a mane of blackened scales and the wings of a dragon, though no proof has been found to back these claims.

Belarin

Behold the docile belarin, the great farmhand of Valcia.  These large, four-legged beasts are almost always seen assisting farmers with their fields, as they can carry and pull massive loads and plowing equipment.  Belarins look rather awkward to say the least, as they are very hairy and have a large hump in middle of their back.

An adult male belarin can stand about six feet tall from hoof to hump and can reach almost eight feet in length.   Two large and scraggly horns grow out of its sunken head and its tail is likened to that of a hairy stub.  Clothes made out of belarin fur are said to be quite warm and are commonly worn by farmers and those of humble lifestyles.

Corath Serpent

It would be hard to find a creature in all of Valcia whose name would bring more fear to the hearts of men than the corath serpent.  Large, swift, and deadly, the corath serpent is native to the Plains of Rys in the western stretches of the Amerys Freeland.

Able to grow more than forty feet from nose to tail, and adult corath serpent can easily swallow a grown man whole.  Despite its massive size, a corath serpent can be recognized by a thick, bright green stripe running along its sides from its eyes to its tail.  The scales running along its back and head are dark gray while the scales of its underbody are a light gray.

Each corath serpent has a mane, similar to that of a cobra, with bright green markings on either side.  Its gaping maw is full of small, sharp teeth and has two incisors that can reach up to nine inches in length.  These fangs can retract at will and can also deliver a very deadly poison to its prey, though if one is unlucky enough to become bitten by a corath serpent, the poison is usually the least of one’s worries.

Diamond Horn

A diamond horn is a breed of deer commonly found in the Fairn Forest south of Veir.  This breed has earned its name because of the unique design a buck’s antlers will become if it reaches full adulthood.

When a young male’s horns first start growing, they do so in a very straight fashion.  When he begins to reach adulthood, a bend starts to form at the base of the antlers.  Given enough time, the tip of each antler will meet above his head, forming the outline of a diamond.

Firefoot Stallion

The firefoot is a wild breed of horse rarely seen in this age.  So named for the bright red fur growing up the base of its legs, the firefoot have almost been hunted to extinction due to the high price nobles will pay for clothing adorned with the striking fur.

Though most notably known for their red markings, the firefoot is one of Valcia’s fastest breed of horse.  Swift and nimble, the firefoot has been called upon throughout the ages when timing was of the essence.

Rare glimpses of these majestic animals can sometimes be seen on the southern foothills of the Leranos Mountains.

Necorus

Native to the Eleryn Sea, the necorus is seen by sailors and merchant ships as a sign of good luck and fortune.  Believed to be a variation of squid, the necori have large, pearlescent shells that shine with the beauty and splendor of every color of the rainbow.

Necori usually grow to about fifteen feet in length but, on rare occasion, one can be found that is easily twice that size.  The length of their off-white tentacles are roughly two-thirds their total height, with their shell rounding out the remaining third.

Though they rarely swim near the surface, any sighting of a necorus is considered favorable in the sense that good fortune is granted to whomever sees it, whether this luck be for a safe voyage, bountiful fishing trip, or profitable trade at the next port.  However, this is merely superstition, and jewelry made out of necori shells have grown in popularity over the last few centuries, leading to even less sightings of these remarkable creatures.

Peredorn

The peredorn are a unique breed of bird indeed.  Capable of extended flight, peredorn have been known to fly clear across the Eleryn Sea in search of new nesting grounds.

Peredorn feathers come in many different shapes and sizes, but the most common colors come in shades of brown, reddish brown, gray, white, black, yellow and orange, or any combination therein.  One standalone trait of the peredorn is that the tips of the feathers on their scalps, chests, wings and tails give off a dark but shiny cyan glint.  In fact, the rare metallic ore pereclite shares this same cyan color and was named after the peredorn.

Peredorn have short, yellow beaks and rounded heads that sit atop their long necks.  Able to stand over seven feet tall, an adult peredorn can actually support a human rider.  Though, due their naturally slow running speed and low weight tolerance, peredorn are rarely used as ground transportation, and given the danger and unpredictability of mounted flight, peredorn riding is also very uncommon with civilians.  Military peredorn riders, however, are a different case entirely.

Given the length of time and dedication it takes to master the art of peredorn riding, military peredorn riders are seen as a prestigious wing of any kingdoms military.  However, once again due to their low weight tolerance, mounted flight is usually limited to one hour per day per peredorn, lest the peredorn tire and fall from the sky.  Because of this unique trait, a peredorn rider’s main military task is to patrol the skies nearest to their kingdom’s capitol.

Vyurian Drake

Vyurian drakes are feared creatures of legend whose devastating power reigns unrivaled throughout all of Valcia.  By far the most fierce and destructive of all of the dragons, the vyurian drake is so named because it was once believed that something so evil and malicious could only come from Vyuria itself.

Bull vyurian drakes can grow over forty feet long from its horns to its tail and can boast a wingspan of over seventy feet.  The scales on its back are nigh impenetrable and are as black as night.  The scales on its underbelly range in color from light to dark grey and all have a faint silhouette of a red as deep as blood.  Its maw is full of hundreds of large, sharp teeth and two massive horns protrude from the base of its skull and can extend out to several feet past the tip of the drake’s nose.

Being such a feared beast, vyurian drakes were believed to have been hunted to extinction over a thousand years ago.  However, there have been numerous unconfirmed sightings since that time, and whenever a field is unexplainably found in flames or a large group of animals are found mysteriously slain and ravaged, one can’t help but wonder if our ancestors had truly killed them all.

Wayurn

Wayurns are a miniature breed of dragon that can sometimes be found living in the highest peaks of Valcia.  Though they are carnivorous, wayurns are also incessantly timid creatures, and are rarely ever seen. This has led to the belief by some that they do not even exist, though any educated person would be able to tell you that they most certainly do.

Wayurns have been seen in many colors, but the most common is white, followed by light blue, green, red, dark blue, and the rarely seen black.  Patches of soft, short fur grow on the tops of their head, hands, feet, wings, and chest, and these patches of fur are consistently white on every color of wayurn.

A full-grown wayurn can reach just over two feet in length, from the top of its head to the tip of its tail.  Unlike their larger and more deadly cousins, wayurns do not have the ability to breath fire and their features are more rounded and soft than pointed and sharp.  They have large eyes and small mouths, but these mouths are full of sharp teeth and, when threatened, have been known to bite off a finger or two.

Their two hind legs are quite muscular compared to their two arms, as they tend to push off with their hind legs in order to gain flight, which they maintain with their small wings.  Their front arms are mostly used for climbing and holding onto small animals and birds that they catch for food.
