Typhus Chatea

Bitter, reserved, and callous, Typhus serves as the unbalanced protagonist of The Awakening Saga series. Son of Aranas, the first Warrior of Light since the end of the Great Calm, and twin brother of Aarien, Typhus has lived much of his life under the pressure of living up to his family’s legacy. Taught by his father how to wield a sword and use magic, he has always been bested by his brother when sparring. But while Aarien may be the one who wins at swordplay, Typhus is the one who has won the fair Serene’s heart.

Though his coldhearted demeanor would express otherwise, his piercing blue eyes hide behind them a multitude of pain and regret. Constantly struggling between love and loss, Typhus battles his inner demons while he searches for a new meaning and purpose for his life. Along the way, he falls into the ranks of the Dreth Kaldun and takes on the mercenary alias of Typheer, which serves to further distance himself from the life and values he once held.

Once carefree and optimistic, Typhus made plans to marry Serene and follow in the footsteps of his father and join the Erenian military when he came of age. However, merely weeks before he and Aarien were to join the Erenian army, a whirlwind of tragedy falls upon him and is ripped away from everything and everyone he had known and loved. He has since become very isolated and reserved; blaming others for the fractured remains of the life he now lives.

Kayden Kerne
Age: 17
Hair: Brown, medium length
Eyes: Brown

Ever-loyal friend of Typhus, Kayden works on his father’s farm in their hometown of Treyla. Neither skilled with a sword nor too terribly bright, Kayden finds pleasure in the simpler things in life. What he lacks in charisma and strength he more than makes up for with his selfless attitude and optimism. His beloved pet falcon, Vise, was given to him by his father and Kayden is rarely seen without him perched on his shoulder or flying nearby. Vise even contributes to the farm by chasing off crows and other scavengers who would try to sneak a free meal off of the fields.

Though he is assured it would never happen, Kayden often dreams of leaving his family’s farm behind and traveling the realm in search of adventure and fame. However, these ambitions will most likely stay unobtainable aspirations as Kayden has just about as much courage as a newborn belarin. He has lost many crops and livestock over the years to local predators due to his cowardice. In fact, even though Kayden was with Typhus on the day of his exile, he lacks the proof and courage it would take to clear his friend’s name. Constantly haunted by his guilt, Kayden vows to one day repay Typhus for this failure.

Reidyn Sari’ai
Age: 52
Hair: Silver, short
Eyes: Hazel

Reidyn Sari’ai is somewhat of an elder in the small village of Treyla. Although he has been asked to take leadership of the village on numerous occasions, he has turned down every request as he prefers to serve his fellow villagers instead of assuming a formal leadership title. This hasn’t stopped the villagers from coming to him to seek advice and settle disputes, however. Famously recognized as a man of few words, Reidyn’s demeanor can seem intimidating to some. Many people were surprised that he adopted Serene after her parents died all those years ago.

Reidyn has a very special relationship with Serene and tends to be quite overprotective. In fact, he has made known on numerous occasions his discontent toward her relationship with Typhus. Seeing Typhus as too reckless and undisciplined, Reidyn passively encourages Serene to leave him for Aarien, whom he would prefer as a suitor. Reidyn serves as one of the strongest voices in Serene’s life to move on from her past and to embrace her future.

Aarien Chatea
Age: 18
Hair: Blonde, medium length, wavy
Eyes: Blue

Strong-willed, disciplined and charming, Aarien has become a beloved member of the village of Treyla. Between him and Typhus, Aarien is the most like their father in both stature and character. He has trained with Aranas almost every day since he was a boy and has grown more experienced with a sword than most soldiers twice his age. He tends to excel in all that he does, including besting his brother in swordplay, but has failed in winning the love of Serene; a loss that he would gladly trade his skill with the sword for. However, Aarien made the choice to not let his feelings for Serene put a vice on his relationship with Typhus, and the two brothers maintained a strong relationship throughout.

Aarien and Typhus were preparing to enlist in the Erenian army together as they had always spoken of when tragedy falls upon their small town. It is through these flames of devastation and loss that Aarien’s character is forged into something greater than himself as he begins to rise up and lead others through their pain as he puts his own to the side. Heart broken at his own brother’s supposed treachery, Aarien uses his pain as a fuel to push him ever forward within the ranks of the Erenian army. Aarien serves as a comfort for Serene through their ordeal and, with Typhus no longer in their lives, he begins to pursue her once again.

Serene Arylae
Age: 17
Hair: Light brown, long
Eyes: Hazel

The carefree and energetic Serene Arylae has a gentle beauty about her that has caught the eye of the twin brothers Typhus and Aarien. Though Aarien was more persistent and vocal about his feelings for Serene, it was Typhus who won her heart in the end. She is the only daughter of Serin Arylae, who fought alongside Aranas and Kose against the Soldier of Darkness, but was sadly orphaned as a small child. Reidyn Sari’ai was given the charge of raising the young Serene, a task which he gladly accepted.

Living in the small village of Treyla since birth, Serene has lived a rather sheltered life. She has no real memory of pain or loss as she was too young to remember her parent’s deaths and has always been well taken care of. As such, she was unprepared to handle the accusations against, and painful loss of, her beloved Typhus. Utterly grief stricken and lost within her own soul, Serene is forced to live day by day if not minute by minute as she tries to bear with her pain. She now struggles between the pressure of moving on and accepting her loss and a constant, logic-defying feeling in the back of her heart that tells her there is still hope.

Behrus Veyron
Age: 63
Hair: gray, medium length, medium beard
Eyes: Green

A man of peerless wisdom and intellect, Behrus lives a humble life within the walled capitol city of Veir. Though he is generally patient and understanding, Behrus tends to be quite short tempered in the presence of stupidity and ignorance. A well traveled man, Behrus knows many details about far away lands, cultures, and creatures that many scholars are not even aware of. In fact, he spends most of his time in his studies and his entire basement serves as his private library and study.

Behrus has a type of grandfather/grandchild relationship with Typhus, Aarien, and Serene as he knew their fathers quite well. It is because of this relationship that Typhus goes to him for guidance after his world is turned asunder. Knowing it is no longer safe for him in the Kingdom of Erenon, Behrus sends Typhus to an old friend named Acaena living in Port Maverick. Though he does not question it at the time, Typhus can’t help but shake the feeling that Behrus knows more about his situation than was let on.

Thatcher Locksteed
Age: 32
Hair: Brown, short length, goatee
Eyes: Brown

A mysterious man to say the least, Thatcher is known for his adventurous spirit and lack of regard for other’s personal property. He spends most of his time looking for new ways to make a quick coin or two and is known by many to be a gambler and by even more to be a cheater. He is constantly on the move; either from town to town or kingdom to kingdom. He would tell you that he walks this path because of an insatiable need for new adventures or treasure to ‘find,’ but others will say that his crude nature and constant brawling forces him to stay on the move to keep one step ahead of a prison cell. One benefit to this lifestyle is that Thatcher keeps himself apprised of the wealth of information to be found in Valcia and is constantly sought out for his knowledge.

Thatcher’s path crosses with a young and distraught Typhus on their voyage to Port Maverick. Already knowing of the tragedy that has befallen the young son of Aranas, he decides to befriend and help Typhus. Being one who knows the art of not being found, Thatcher advises Typhus to change his name and points him in the direction of the Dreth Kaldun. Why he chose to help Typhus as opposed to turning him in and collecting a reward is a mystery that may never be known.

Zoapin Siriny III
Age: 22

Next in line to the throne of the Kingdom of Erenon, Prince Zoapin Siriny III has grown into a model prince. Courageous, humble and charming, Zoapin is learned in the ways of battle as well as magic, although this is kept a secret at the request of his father, King Zoapin Siriny II. He has become quite talented at the use of magic too, as he was trained first-hand by the Konin Ari themselves.

Prince Zoapin has known Typhus and Aarien for many years as Aranas had frequent business at Castle Veir. Known as Zoah by his friends, he has always looked forward to their visits to hear tales about events outside of the capitol city. Immediately following Kose’s appointment as Chief Advisor to his father, Zoah looked upon him with suspecting eyes. Though there has been no reason for cause, he distrusts Kose and has taken upon himself the task of finding out the truth of what really happened to Kose all those years ago.

Josiah Ravenfell
Age: 34

A man of discipline and a strict code of honor, Josiah is the captain of the Lords of Veir and serves within the Erenian army. His skill with the sword is second to none and is often asked to train the new recruits. As such, he has the special appointment of being King Zoapin II’s personal guardian. Josiah takes this role with the utmost diligence and is prepared to sacrifice himself for his liege at any moment. It is because of this devout loyalty and commitment to service that has earned Captain Ravenfell many acknowledgements within both the Lords of Veir and the Erenian army.

Josiah’s sense of duty extends beyond his service to his kingdom to his service to his family. His wife and newborn son live with him on the castle grounds and he always finds ways to balance his duties to the crown with his commitments to his family. His is a life of sacrifice, humility and un-wavering service, but it has been rewarded with honors that most men would kill to obtain. However, a time is soon coming that will test the limit of his loyalties, the depth of his honor, and how much he truly is willing to sacrifice for his kingdom.

Acaena Ealus
Age: 54

Beautiful, noble, and graceful, Acaena is a well known denizen of Port Maverick. Although she is neither a member of the Amerysian Grand Council nor any other form of civil leadership, she is often sought out for her insight into even the most trivial of matters. Living alone in the grand Ealus estate, Acaena often houses guests to keep herself company.

One such guest turns out to be a young man whom is sent to her by their mutual friend, Behrus Veyron. Though Typheer’s demeanor is quite off-putting, Acaena is somehow able to melt through his icy walls and see Typheer for who he really is. As she watches this young man’s path continue to spiral ever downward, she never ceases believing in his good nature and constantly encourages him to that end.

Alina Jaehan
Age: 18
Hair: Blonde, long
Eyes: Hazel

Born the only daughter of Grand Councilman Diegus Jaehan of Amerys, Alina has lived a rather secure and sheltered life. Rather naïve and strong-willed, she has been known to scare off a suitor or two. Yet despite her more robust qualities, she has a certain charm about her as well. An admirer of the arts, Alina had studied acting as a child and is now a member of the actor’s guild that performs in Port Maverick’s Hunteran Theatre. A fan of love stories in particular, she has always dreamed of living out a whirlwind romance rather than merely acting them out on stage.

A friend of Acaena’s for many years, Alina visits her at the Ealus estate as often as she can. It is during one such visit that her path crosses with a handsome new face; a young and mysterious man named Typheer. Through his cold and off-putting demeanor, Alina sees a strong and passionate longing for a lost love. Though she would not normally associate herself with a member of a lower class, Alina chooses to befriend him, all the while secretly wishing that the passion she saw in his eyes would one day be for her.

Althos Kayre
Age: 21

Eyes: Brown

As assassin forged from a tragic and secretive past, Althos speaks few words and shows even less emotion. Known throughout the Dreth Kaldun for holding no loyalty even towards his fellow comrades, Althos would sooner leave an ally behind than risk failing his objective. However, when a young mercenary named Typheer joins their ranks, the two quickly form a bond of friendship and trust as they climb the ranks of the Dreth Kaldun.

Despite his age, Althos is one of the most feared assassins of his guild. Holding no prejudice for women, children and the like, Althos will kill whoever he is told with nary a question asked. Adding to his deadly and mysterious reputation is a unique blade called a rhodyn, a saber-like weapon he wields in which its blade swivels along the hilt at will. Althos’ agility and mastery of the rhodyn has led to more than a few terrifyingly quick ends to groups of multiple adversaries.

Kose Az’ziel
Age: 42
Hair: Silver, long
Eyes: Blue

Kose is a modern day legend who fought alongside Aranas and Serin to defeat the first Soldier of Darkness to plague the lands Valcia since the end of the Great Calm. After his defeat, the three heroes discovered the existence of a mysterious entity known as Ateron behind the dark power of the Phaeron. Kose then wielded the Phaeron and became the Soldier of Darkness himself, albeit only in order to lead him and his companions to where the malicious Ateron resided. After a great battle, it was believed that Kose sacrificed himself in order to save Aranas after Ateron was defeated deep in the ancient catacombs of Flaegra.

However, almost twenty years after the defeat of Ateron, Kose has seemingly returned from the dead. Hailed as a long lost hero, Kose is asked to become the Chief Advisor to King Zoapin Siriny II of Erenon, to which he accepts.
